Humans have been affected by Coronavirus in more ways than simply the physical aspects of contracting the illness. We are social creatures, and the emotional stress of feeling lonely combined with financial stressors increases our risk of depression and anxiety! When we’re not at full mental health, we are more susceptible to physical ailments.
With health officials locally and worldwide recommending that we practice social distancing, it can be hard to meet our emotional social needs. Large meeting places or gatherings where friends commonly gather are prohibited, bars and restaurants are closing around the world, and in some areas, people aren’t allowed to gather anywhere in groups of more than 5. Some cannot leave for more than grocery shopping! As we’re asked to self-quarantine, the strain of feeling scared, lonely, or anxious can prevail.
Talkspace reminds us that while standard outlets are out of reach, there are still ways we can connect with our friends and neighbors while we practice social distancing. It’s vital to remember that we’re not alone! We are all in this together as a species regardless of social, ethnic, or economic differences. We’re uniting in our separation, to protect those who are less able to fight off the virus.
One of the common ways to boost our mood during these stressful times is simply to reach out. Call a friend or connect with a family member! Sending a text to someone else who might be feeling lonely can help everyone feel better. Don’t place blame on a region or any group of people, because this increases emotional distancing. Help our friends, neighbors, and anyone else in the community who may not be able to leave with their errands. Remember the importance of good hygiene! Use the time to enjoy the other people in quarantine with you, and celebrate the time you have together.
Talkspace reminds us that mental health cannot take a backseat during the pandemic. If you are struggling, there are therapists available by phone that can help. The federal government has a crisis hotline that you can contact as well. COVID-19 is a collective problem that requires us to come together as a collective to care for one another.
