Sheldon Lavin: Leadership is in His DNA

Some people are just born with the gift to lead. Not all those will lead the world into a better future, so it’s important to make sure the right leader is leading. Sheldon Lavin was the perfect leader for OSI Group, one of the largest companies in the food industry today. Leading a company like OSI requires humbleness and brazen talents.

Sheldon Lavin was born to lead a company. Even as a young man, growing up in Chicago, he always knew he wanted to run his own company. After earning a degree in accounting and finance, he opened his own financial firm, consulting for neighboring businesses in downtown Chicago. One day, some representatives from Otto & Sons contacted him.

Mr. Lavin considers the call to be his “big break”. Before Otto & Sons came to his office, he only worked with smaller companies. Suddenly, he found himself in a room with a company he knew would achieve massive success under the right leadership. The executives at that time couldn’t agree more, which is why they invited Lavin to be a part of the company in 1975.

When Sheldon Lavin took over Otto & Sons, the company was going by a different name: OSI Group. OSI Group was the start of a multinational conglomerate and Lavin was at the helm. Under Lavin’s leadership, OSI slowly became one of the largest food processing firms in the world. OSI’s slow rise was due to Lavin’s commitment to keeping the planet and the company’s consumers healthy.

Lavin considers himself and everyone at OSI to be “children of the Earth,” meaning that he only invested his company in sustainable practices. While that might not have been the way of doing things when he first took over the company, it’s become an amazing advantage over the competition today. For decades, OSI has prided itself on not using preservatives in many of its products. These days, preservatives are synonymous with processed foods, so that one practice greatly sets OSI apart from the competition.
