Serge Belamant, CEO of NET1 Technologies

Serge Belamant is a South African entrepreneur and a chief executive officer of NET1 technologies in London. In London, he came up with the idea of streamlining the financial sector using his knowledge in computer science. Apart from being the CEO, he is also the co-founder of the company, founded in 1989. Serge Belamant invented other technologies such as Funds Transfer System (FTS) and the Universal Electronic Payment System (UEPS). Also, he is considered one of the patent holders of Blockchain Technologies.

Serge Belamant used his computer science skill to obtain a government contract in South Africa called SASSA (South Africa Social Security Agency). The contract enabled the Belamant organization to come with modern ways to pay social grants in the Republic of South Africa. The first breakthrough of NET1 technologies was in 1995. Visa hired Serge Belamant organization, giving them the task of inventing a Chip Offline Pre-Authorized Card (COPAC). To come up with the chip, they had to merge two of their technologies, which were FTS and UEPS technologies and EMV. In 1999,Serge Belamant firm purchased Cash Payment Services (CPS) from the South African National Bank. CPS played a vital role in the payment of welfare grants within the borders of South Africa. However, CPS could not reach many people, especially those in rural areas, to access welfare grants. It was only limited to those people that were around urban areas. After the takeover by Belamant firm, they were able to modernize it to reach as many people as possible in accessing the welfare grants. Belamant has been able to impact many people’s lives through the transformation of the welfare system. Approximately more than ten million can now easily access financial services, which was initially very hard to access.
