JD Takes Drones to Inner Mongolia

February 16th is when pilots from JD.com tested new drones in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. At a High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the drones were uses to spray disinfectant at the site. As people begin to travel home from their hometowns to celebrate the Spring Festival, JD has provided its unique solution to help make some sites safer with hygienic measures to keep them safe from potential coronavirus infections. A pair of drones were used to spray select parts of the site wit disinfectant spray, each distributing 10 liters at a time. Pilots were able to maneuver the drones as far at 5km away from their position. This allowed them to cover a substantial range of the city and at a faster pace than they would if relying on humans to spray the disinfectant.

Leading the drone project for Inner Mongolia is Hang Ba. The top tech expert proclaimed that in addition to using drones for shipping duties, even to remote locations or closed-off communities, drones are finding numerous ways to be beneficial to communities by fulfilling a number of roles that would have to be fulfilled by human hands. This is proving to be especially so during the spread of the coronavirus. In the region, JD.com is working alongside Ordos. They’ve pooled their own resources to address the city’s need to meet this epidemic with supplies.

Using their drone program to disinfect sites where a great number of people would congregate, JD is given another opportunity to support the city and display the usefulness of their technology to a community in need. JD will display the usefulness of their drone program again on February 18th as the drones will move elsewhere in Ordos, to disinfect their Dalad banner. This will coincide with resuming delivery services to homes and villages within Dalad that have been closed off to unnecessary traffic to observe public health concerns by limiting the amount of human-to-human contact. This is just an expansion of the emergency services JD.com has provided with their drones, namely in conjunction with the Beijing municipal government and their response in storm relief in May 2018.
